Stay Off Your Front Foot... Unless You Want to Hit .400

I've had little time to devote to this space for months, but I hope to add something soon about "front-foot" hitting: i.e., rising straight up-and-down on the forward leg by the time contact is made. Hitting instructors universally deplore this style, yet it was clearly favored over any other before World War II--back in those dark days, you know, when elite batsmen were still hitting at or around .400. Today only such offensive ne'er-do-wells as Ichiro display such slovenly technique at the highest level. Shame on them! Personally, I find that I simply CANNOT hit any other way, so perhaps it has to do with how one is made. I know my wrists are somewhat odd, for I am unable to do chin-ups with my knuckles facing away from me. But then, were all those artists of the Dead Ball Era also suffering from wrist abnormality? Could it be that today's instructors might possibly be over-generalizing?

More later.
